Dr Lye graduated from the University of Malaya in Singapore in 1960 and worked with the Ministry of Health before becoming a full-time teaching staff of the university in 1963 at the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry in the fields of Prosthodontics and Orthodontics.

In 1965, Dr Lye did his post-graduate training in UK and obtained the Fellowship in Dental Surgery Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and subsequently, a Diplomate in Orthodontics of the Royal College of Surgeons in England.

He was the founding member of the Association of Orthodontics, Singapore in 1991 and an office bearer of the World Dental Education Society (Singapore) / FDI World Dental Foundation Federation since its inception in 1997.

Dr Lye held the post of associate professor until 1974 before moving over to RCOLL.
